A chickadee on the edge of a well-worn field guide, painted in gouache in the manner of a 1940s natural history plate — muted buff, olive, ochre and charcoal. Small on the chest, and larger across the back, where the bird has settled on an open guide beside a pair of binoculars, two sunflower seeds and a dry oak leaf.

The joke, if it is one, is quiet: the bird arrived before you finished looking it up.
