The Angler Cat

A black cat on a low riverbank, a cane rod propped against a stone, a creel and a single brook trout in the grass beside him. Painted in gouache in the manner of a 1940s natural history plate — muted ochre, olive, terracotta and espresso, in autumn light.

It hangs the way a field guide plate hangs: quiet, considered, and funnier the longer you look at it. Suited to a hallway, a study, a kitchen wall, or the narrow bit of space beside a bookcase that nothing else fits.
