Comes First
Every design starts with something an animal actually does. The line on the shirt has to earn it — and if the animal doesn't back it up, we don't print it.
Most animal graphics treat the animal as a mascot. A wolf means loyalty, a lion means courage, and nobody involved has looked at a wolf.
We work the other way round. The research comes first — what the animal is measurably doing, and why it works — and the phrase is written to fit that, in the second person, about you. The engraving is drawn last.
If the fact isn't true, the shirt doesn't get made. That's the whole editorial policy.
The result is a line of engraved apparel that reads as a statement from across a room and holds up when someone gets close enough to read the small print.
Physically cannot roar. Holds its ground at four thousand metres regardless.
Holds a face for years, and tells the others. The ones who earned it don't get forgotten.
Drops the antlers every spring and builds the whole structure again from nothing.
Skin loose enough to turn around inside it. Not looking for a fight, extremely willing to have one.
Wing feathers combed at the leading edge so the air breaks up instead of whistling. Arrives unannounced.
The pack feeds its injured. Belonging isn't decided by who resembles who.
How a design gets made
- The behaviour first — we go looking for something specific and verifiable: a rattlesnake metering its venom by the situation, a nutcracker relocating thirty thousand buried seeds, a crocodile's jaw covered in pressure sensors. Vague symbolism doesn't survive this step.
- Then the phrase — two or three words, second person, addressed to the person wearing it rather than to the animal. It has to be the plain truth of what the animal does, said about a human.
- Then the drawing — engraved line work, cross-hatched for shadow, no gradients and no solid fills. The silhouette has to carry the message before any of the detail arrives.
- Then the edit — far more gets drawn than gets printed. What reaches the shop is what still works at arm's length on a dark garment.
Why it looks like this
The reference is the engraved natural history plate — the kind of line work that existed because photography didn't yet, where every shadow had to be built by hand out of hatching. It's a technique that rewards restraint, which suits a brand whose whole argument is that the quiet version is usually the strong one.
Bone ink on dark cloth, and very little else. Black, dark grey, navy, coffee — with the occasional colourway that breaks the rule on purpose. Front carries the animal, back carries the line, and neither one shouts.
Nothing exists until you order it
We hold no stock. Not a single box of anything. Every tee, hoodie, button-up and denim jacket is printed after the order comes in and sent directly to you.
That's slower than a warehouse and we've decided we're fine with it. It means no pallet of unsold hoodies in a size nobody wanted, and it means an animal can go in the shop on the strength of the idea rather than on a forecast.
It also shapes how we handle things going wrong. We don't ask for returns, because a returned made-to-order item can't go to anyone else. Send a photo instead and we'll replace it. See Returns & Replacements and Shipping & Delivery.
Who we are
Smaller than you're imagining. We do the research, draw the plates, write the lines and answer the emails — frequently the same person doing all four in one afternoon. There is no call centre. When you write to us, the person who chose that animal reads it.
We'd rather make a hundred people genuinely glad they bought something than a hundred thousand mildly aware we exist. Slower way to build a shop, considerably better way to enjoy running one.
